loafer. Loafer, for “a lazy do-nothing, an idler, or lounger,” is apparently an Americanism, first recorded in 1830, deriving from the German Landlaufer, “vagabond.” Other possible an- cestors are the English dialect word louper, “vagabond,” the ex- pression to loup the tether, “to wander,” and the Dutch loof, “weary.” The verb to loaf is apparently a back-formation from the noun. Loafer has been the name for a slip-on shoe without laces in the U.S. since the 1940s. |
