Ben Jonson’s play Every Man in His Humor (1598) gave us the character Captain Bobadill, an old soldier who gravely boasts of his conquests and is proved as vain and cow- ardly as he is boastful. From the old soldier’s name we have the word bobadil, “a braggart who pretends to great prowess.” Johnson patterned his character on Boabdil, a late 15th-century Moorish king of Granada. King Boabdil was noted for the same characteristics as the fictional captain. |
