Boanerges. Any loud orator or preacher. The Hebrew Boan- erges means “sons of thunder” and was the surname Jesus gave to his disciples the brothers James and John, sons of Zebedu. These disciples were rebuked by Jesus when, after the Samari- tans failed to receive their master, they suggested: “Lord, wilt thou that we bid fire to come down from heaven and consume them.” The story is told in Mark 3:17 and Luke 9:54. |
