词汇 | like rats deserting a sinking ship |
词源 | like rats deserting a sinking ship. Brewer tells us that “it was an old superstition that rats deserted a ship before she set out on a voyage that was to end in her loss.” However, the expression probably comes from a 1579 proverb claiming that rats desert a falling house. Any sensible rat would do either if it could, but the expression still describes a selfish, cowardly desertion. |
