They led a monastic life, shunning marriage and wealth, and similarly ascetic persons are sometimes called Essenes or Essenic today. Little accurate historical information is available about the Essenes, but since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Qumràn, thought to be the Essenian homeland, there has been renewed interest in the group.
