| 词源 | esquire. Esquire is mainly used in American English today as a title of respect after an attorney’s name, a usage applied to both male and female lawyers in recent times. In British En- glish, however, the title is commonly used after the name of any man. Esquire began life as the title given to a knight’s personal attendant, one training to be a knight himself. Such attendants carried the knight’s shield, hence their name, from the Old French esquier, shield bearer. |
