词汇 | run for your life |
词源 | run for your life. According to one old tale, a fast runner of the duke of Monmouth was captured during the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685 and told that he could run for his life, that is, his life would be spared if he could outrun a horse. The con- test was held, the horse losing the long race, and the runner was freed. This is supposed to be the origin of run for your life, though it was probably common long before any such race—if indeed there was one. It is, however, possible for a good runner to beat a horse in a long race like a marathon. |
