Rolling Stones; a rolling stone gathers no moss. In 1961 the British rock group called the Rolling Stones named themselves after the Muddy Waters classic blues song “Rollin’ Stone.” Mud- dy Waters, in turn, had been inspired by the anonymous an- cient proverb, “a rolling stone gathers no moss,” which dates back to at least the 14th century and means that someone al- ways moving won’t ever accumulate a fortune (the moss on the rock). |
