unconditional surrender. “Unconditional Surrender” was the nickname of Union General U. S. (Ulysses Simpson) Grant, who would give “no terms but unconditional surrender” to the Confederates in 1862 when his forces captured Fort Donelson in Tennessee, the first major Union victory of the war.
