Ulysses S. Grant. Most people believe this was the name of Union Civil War general U. S. Grant, but his real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant—a clerical mistake at West Point had listed him as Ulysses Simpson Grant, and he accepted the er- ror until the end of his life, even in the title of his Memoirs. He was called Sam at the Point, however; the old story was that an upperclassman spied his name given as U. S. Grant on a bulletin board listing of new cadets and joked that this stood for United States Grant, or better yet, Uncle Sam Grant. “That’s what he is,” another joker supposedly chimed in: “Un- cle Sam Grant—the grandson of our good old Uncle Sam.” The awkward little soldier was glad to be called Sam, too, throughout his career. He liked it better than the strange Ul- ysses and far better, of course, than the Useless of his child- hood playmates. It was also clearly preferable to his other nickname, “Little Beauty,” given to the good-looking soldier by the officers of his regiment before the Mexican War.
