词汇 | underground |
词源 | underground; underground railroad. Since about 1815, aboilitionists helped slaves escape from the South. By the early 1830s, railroads were becoming common in the United States and the term underground railroad came into being. Though there was no real underground railroad, the term persisted and underground railroad was even shortened to railroad. These railroads even had stations, where the slaves hid during the day, and conductors who guided them from place to place in the dark. By the time of the Civil War, thousands of slaves had been freed in this way. |
