词汇 | un-american |
词源 | un-American. Un-American is a very American word, dat- ing back to at least 1817, when it is first recorded, and not at all of recent vintage. It means contrary to U.S. values, even traitor- ous, and was most prominent recently in the name of the House [of Representatives] Un-American Activities Committee, ac- tive from 1938 to 1975, which critics claim was more un- American than many of the people it investigated. In 1945 HUAC’s name became the Committee on Un-American Activi- ties; in 1969 it was renamed the Committee on Internal Securi- ty; and it was finally abolished in 1975. |
