umlaut. In German the umlaut is used to indicate an internal vowel change in a word or to show that a letter is pronounced differently than it ordinarily would be. It is also called a diaer- esis in English, when it is used above the second of two coupled vowels to show separate pronunciation, as in coöperate. The only English or American authors, and perhaps the only En- glish or American family, with an umlaut in their name are the Brontë sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne. Their father, Patrick Brunty, trying to distinguish himself at Cambridge, changed the family name to Brontë soon after Lord Nelson was created duke of Bronte; he added the German umlaut for even more éclat.
