词汇 | uncouth |
词源 | uncouth. Couth, originally meaning “known or familiar,” dates back before Chaucer’s day. Its antonym uncouth is just as old, the word being used in Beowulf for “unknown or unfamil- iar.” The dislike of the unfamiliar, of strangers, foreigners, is probably responsible for the change in the word’s meaning over the years to unseemly, awkward, uncultured, etc. |
