Several derivations have been suggested for this in- strument of sexual pleasure, which the French call a consolateur: 1) a corruption of the Italian deletto, “delight”; 2) a corruption of the English diddle; 3) the cylindrical dildo tree or bush, which grows 10 feet or so straight up. The O.E.D. says only that the word is of obscure origin and offers an earlier date (1610) for its use for a phallus than its use for a plant. |
