词汇 | coolidge effect |
词源 | Coolidge effect. Old Cal Coolidge isn’t remembered for his great wit; in fact, he is probably the butt of more jokes than any other American president (when told that he had died, Dor- othy Parker quipped, “How could they tell?”). The Coolidge ef- fect appears to be one more joke on Silent Cal. According to The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology, this is “the phenomenon that the males of many species will show high continuous sexu- al performance for extended periods of time with successive introduction of new, receptive females.” Our authority goes on to claim that “the name for the effect derives from an old and very bad joke about the American president Calvin Coolidge which space limitations prevent telling here.” I haven’t yet been able to find the old joke about the president who “looked like he’d been weaned on a pickle,” but when I do I’ll share it. See alice blue; i do not choose to run. |
