spittlebug. These small sucking insects produce a white frothy material in which they live and which is often called “frog spittle” (because gardeners once believed that such white masses on plants were made by frogs). Despite its looks, how- ever, the froth or foam isn’t spittle and does little harm to gar- den plants. It just forms a protective blob of foam under which the busy spittlebug larva, safe from predators, can happily feed. |
