spineless as a jellyfish. Jellyfish for “a person of flabby char- acter” was first recorded in 1883, and spineless as a jellyfish probably appeared soon after, though the exact date isn’t known. This Americanism is based on the common sea crea- ture jellyfish, which is 99 percent water, composed of a gelatinous substance called mesoglea, with no backbone. Considering its construction, however, the jellyfish, like man, is hardly spine- less and does the best it can. See medusa. |
