spinnaker. The most probable explanation we have for this word is that back in the 1860s an unknown yacht owner in- vented a sail rigged at right angles from his racing vessel’s side, a sail that extended from masthead to deck and ballooned far out to take advantage of the slightest breeze. The racing vessel was named Sphinx, but its crew had difficulty in pronouncing its name, calling it Spinnicks. Thus, the new sail was referred to as Spinnicker’s sail and finally became known as a spinnaker.
