词汇 | split infinitive |
词源 | split infinitive. The late Bergen Evans once compiled a list of writers who commonly split infinitives (that is, placed a word between to and the simple form of a verb, as in “to quick- ly walk away”) to show that it has been the practice of our best writers. Over a relatively short period he came up with Sir Philip Sidney, Sir Thomas Browne, Donne, Pepys, Defoe, Sam- uel Johnson, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Lamb, Byron, De Quincey, Macaulay, Holmes, Whittier, George Eliot, Carlyle, Browning, Arnold, Pater, Ruskin, Hardy, Meredith, Galswor- thy, Conan Doyle, Kipling, Shaw, Benjamin Franklin, Abra- ham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and even Henry James. One theory intended to justify the split in- finitive holds that in Latin the infinitive form of a verb is only one word and thereby unsplittable, whereas in English the two-word infinitive need not be governed by any such classical rule. |
