According to Everett Dick in The Dixie Frontier (1948), a peculiar way of “banking” gold and silver on the fron- tier was “to bore holes in large blocks of wood, fill the holes with coins, and drive tightly fitting pegs in them. Then the pegs were sawed off short. This left no way to remove the money ex- cept by splitting the log.” |
