词汇 | splash |
词源 | splash. Splash seems an innocent word, evoking pleasant days at the beach or pool, but it is also a term for a wave generat- ed by a landslip. One such wave was bigger than any ever record- ed. On July 9, 1958, an earthquake caused nearly 100 million tons of rock and glacial ice from the Fairweather Range of the Saint Elias Mountains to fall into Lituya Bay, Alaska. A wave of almost 1,800 feet—a third of a mile high—splashed up the mountain on the opposite shore, stripping it of all vegetation to a height of 1,740 feet—which is taller than the Sears Tower in Chicago, America’s tallest building. One trawler was lifted from anchor by the splash and carried unharmed from the bay to the ocean behind, its crew looking down at trees far below. See tsunami. |
