rap. The New Dictionary of American Slang (1986) suggests that rap, “to converse,” dates from the 1960s, but it seems from the context of Damon Runyon’s “Madame La Gimp” (1920) to have been used about a half century before then: “I got to the Marberry . . . and who opens the door of Madame La Gimp’s apartment for me but Moosh, the door man. . . . I wish Moosh a hello and he never raps to me but only bows, and takes my hat.” If this example of rap means “talks,” then it may be the first use of the word rap in this sense, a theory that apparently hasn’t been proposed before. Rap could have entered black English as “impromptu repartee or discussion,” a meaning first recorded in 1965, and may have finally become the name of the rap style of popular music developed by blacks, a term first recorded in 1979.
