词汇 | tartar |
词源 | tartar. Contrary to popular belief, Swiss physician, alchemist, and writer Paracelsus (Philippppus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenhein, 1493?–1541) did not invent the word tartar, which apparently derives from an Arabic word and was record- ed before Paracelsus. Paracelsus did write that “All diseases can be traced to a coagulation of undigested matter in the bowels.” He called these acids of putrefaction “tartar” because their de- posits in joints, muscles, and other parts of the body “burn like hell, and Tartarus is hell.” He went on to say that “Doctors boast of their [knowledge of] anatomy, but they fail to see the tartar sticking to their teeth.” Thus, though not the inventor of tartar, he may have been the first to use the word as it is used in all the toothpaste ads. |
