词汇 | tarheel |
词源 | Tarheel; Tarheel State. A nickname for a North Carolinian. According to the Overland Monthly (V.3, 1869): “A brigade of North Carolinians . . . failed to hold a certain hill [in a Civil War battle] and were laughed at by Mississippians for having forgotten to tar their heels that morning. Hence originated their cant name, ‘Tar heels.’ ” The state of North Carolina has been called the Tar and Turpentine State. Other North Carolina nicknames have included the Old North State and the Land of the Sky, in reference to its beautiful western mountain country. In putting down their older, once more sophisticated neighbors Virginia and South Carolina, North Carolinians have called their state the Valley of Humility Between Two Mountains of Conceit. |
