tart. Another example of words that change in meaning. The fruit pie dessert called a tart derives from the Latin tarta mean- ing the same. By at least the 1860s tart was being used as a term of endearment for a girl or woman, but after another 20 years, for reasons unknown, it took on its present sense of an immoral woman or prostitute, never to be used endearingly again. |
