词汇 | tasmania |
词源 | Tasmania. An Australian island rich in natural resources named for Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman (1602?–59). Tasman himself named the island Van Diemen’s Land after the governor general of the Dutch East Indies, who sent him to ex- plore Pacific waters in 1642. It wasn’t until 1853 that Tasmania was named after Tasman. The Tasman Sea and the Tasman Gla- cier (where ski meets are held) also bear the explorer’s name. So do the predatory Tasmanian devil and Tasmanian wolf or ti- ger, both of which are native to the island. |
