tarot. Tarot is the French name of the popular central Europe- an card game called tarok, which the Encyclopaedia Britannica says is the world’s oldest surviving card game. The game is named after Tar, the Egyptian god of the underworld, whom the Greeks called Tartarus. It has many features borrowed by other card games, including competitive bidding and the wild joker, and is now played with 54 cards, 22 of them trump card tarots bearing allegorical representations. These 22 illustrated cards, depicting vices, virtues, and elemental forces, are the only ones used in the fortune-telling game called tarot that most people are familiar with.
