In The Joys of Yiddish (1968) Leo Rosten calls kosher “the most resourceful Yiddish word in the English language” and gives 10 meanings for it, ranging from its original meaning of “fit to eat, because ritually clean according to Jewish dietary laws,” to “legitimate, legal and lawful,” as in “Are you sure this deal is kosher?” Probably the most widely used of Yiddish words in English (excepting names for things, such as matzo, bagel, etc.) kosher derives from the Hebrew kasher, “fit, proper, permissible.” See yiddish words in english.
