| 词源 | devil dogs. The Germans in World War I called the U.S. Ma- rines of the 4th Brigade Teufelhunden, or devil dogs, because they were such fierce fighters. The name stuck as a nickname for marines. So did the Marine slogan Retreat, hell!, a shorten- ing of the reply Marine captain Lloyd Williams gave a French- man when asked to fall back at the Battle of Belleau Wood: Retreat, hell!
