词汇 moot point
词源
moot point. A moot point is either a question that is debata- ble or a point that is purely hypothetical. The Anglo-Saxon words mot, “to meet,” and gemot, “a meeting,” are the parents of the term. In ancient times a moot was an assembly of the peo- ple, usually a court where important questions were settled by means of the public assembly. Debates on important issues were common in such courts, giving the word moot its present meanings. Moot courts, where hypothetical cases are discussed by law students for practice, originated at the London law col- leges called the Inns of Court in the 16th century, and these moot courts reinforced the current meaning of moot point.
