morphine. The narcotic drug takes its name from the Roman poet Ovid’s name for the god of dreams, Morpheus, who is the son of Hypnos, the god of sleep. His name, in turn, is based on the Greek morphe, form, with allusion to the forms or shapes seen in dreams. To be in the arms of morpheus is to be asleep. |
