moonshine. Liquor made illicitly by individuals with no dis- tilling license; in this sense, moonshine dates back to the late 19th century. The name reflects the fact that the liquor was made surreptitiously, at night under the light of the moon. It was first used in this sense in America, although the British previously used the term to mean any smuggled liquor. Color- ful synonyms are angel teat, Kentucky fire, squirrel whiskey, swamps dew, white lightning, and white mule. |
