moon shot; moon ball. Moon shot refers to a rocket launch- ing aimed at sending a spacecraft to the Moon, the term first recorded in 1958, before the U.S. made a successful moon shot. In baseball moon shot or moon ball is a long, lofty home run hit far up toward the Moon. Paul Dickson, in The Dickson Baseball Dictionary (1989), calls moon shot “a space age term,” adding that “it took on new meaning in 1986 when a statistician deter- mined that slugger Mike Schmidt hit best under a full moon.” |
