cut up (or split) the melon. This means to divide the spoils or profits of any kind, each person getting a slice of the tasty melon, or profits. Surprisingly, it is a relatively recent term, dat- ing back only to 1906 or so, when it arose as Wall Street jargon for the distribution of extra, unexpected dividends to stockholders. |
