pulse. The word pulse in gardening terminology usually means the edible seeds of leguminous plants such as peas, beans, and lentils, or these legumes themselves. Sometimes the word is used to characterize any herbaceous plant of the pea family, such as alfalfa, clover, and vetch. The harvest festival of the an- cient Greeks called the Pyanepsia took its name from the cooked pulse that was offered at the festival to the god Apollo as the first fruits of the harvest and eaten by all members of the household. |
