词汇 lucky horseshoe
词源
lucky horseshoe. Legend says that St. Dunstan, a blacksmith who later became archbishop of Canterbury, outwitted the dev- il when he asked St. Dunstan to shoe his cloven foot. Recogniz- ing Satan, St. Dunstan tied him up and subjected him to great pain while he shoed him, making the devil promise before he released him that he would never enter a place where a horseshoe was nailed (open end up so that the luck won’t run out) above the door. Another explanation for the lucky horseshoe, put forth by two respected scholars, is that it was originally a symbol of fertility because it roughly resembled the vulva. England’s naval hero Lord Nelson believed in the lucky horseshoe and had one nailed to the mast of his flagship Victo- ry. He lost his life beneath it at Trafalgar. See horseshoes; nelson’s blood.
