词汇 | lutheran |
词源 | Lutheran. Pertaining to the works of German theologian Martin Luther (1493–1546) or the Lutheran church. Luther, the German leader of the Protestant Reformation, was a prodi- gy who began his studies at age five as well as a talented musi- cian who wrote several Lutheran hymns, including the well- known “Away in a Manger.” He may have said, “The devil should not have all the best tunes,” but this saying has been at- tributed to several people. His most famous words are from his speech at the Diet of Worms in 1521, in which he said, “I can do no other” (“Ich kaan nicht anders”) or “This and this alone can I do.” The couplet “Who loves not woman, wine, and song / Remains a fool his whole life long” has also been attributed to him, without any proof. See beast 666; mealy-mouthed; papist; why should the devil have all the good times. |
