Luzon. When anchored in the Philippines, Magellan’s men supposedly asked an old fisherman the name of the place near- est them. “Luzon?” the fisherman replied in Tagalog, meaning “What did you say?” But the sailors thought he meant the place was called Luzon, which remains the Philippine island’s name to this day. Though quite possibly folk etymology, the story bears repeating, both for its entertainment value and for want of a better derivation. See also indri; llama; kangaroo; nome; yucatan. |
