| 词源 | cretan. Ever since the semilegendary prophet and poet Epi- menides wrote that “the cretans are always liars, evil beasts . . .” cretan has meant a liar. Ironically, Epimenides came from Crete. Epimenides is said to have as a boy fallen into a sleep prolonged for 57 years and afterward to have lived a long life—which sounds a lot like a lie itself. A Cretan, capitalized, is an inhabit- ant of the island of Crete. |
