曾用名 cristal，错误地写作 chrystal，古英语 cristal “清晰的冰； 透明的矿物质”，源自古法语 cristal（12世纪，现代法语 crystal），源自拉丁语 crystallus “水晶，冰”，源自希腊语 krystallos，源自 kryos “霜”，源自 PIE 词根 *kreus- “开始冻结，形成外壳”。

拼写在15世纪至17世纪采用了拉丁语形式。这种矿物质自盎格鲁-撒克逊时代以来就被称为这个名字； 古人认为它是一种凝固的冰。在化学中的特定意义上，“具有分子结构的物体，使其成为由一定数量的平面面围成的规则固体”，始于1620年代。
