词汇 | jibber the kibber |
词源 | jibber the kibber. In the late 18th century, jibber the kibber meant to fool seamen and wreck ships “by fixing a candle and lantern round the neck of a horse, one of whose fore feet is tied up; this at night has the appearance of another ship’s light, and the deceived ship cracks into rocks or a [sand] bar.” There seems to be no relation to a ship’s jib in the phrase. In fact, the most anyone can make of the expression is that jibber means to confuse, deriving from the verb to jibber, to talk confusedly. See moonlighting. |
