In Edgar Allan Poe’s celebrated cryptological tale “The Gold-Bug” (1843), a poor southern gentleman captures a rare “golden scarab beetle” that helps him locate the buried trea- sure of Captain Kidd. According to several authorities, the “gold-bug” of the story is based upon the brilliantly colored goldsmith beetle (Cotalpha lanigere), also called the “horn beetle.”
