词汇 go in off the deep end
词源
go in off the deep end. These words suggest someone leaping off a diving board at the deep end of a swimming pool and finding the water was over his or her head. When first used, as military slang in England during World War I, the expression simply meant to get very excited, as if finding yourself in deep water. Then the words came to mean “passionate” as well. A British novelist wrote: “In her set the word adultery was not often mentioned. One went in off the deep end about some- body . . .” U.S. use of the expression is often similar, but Ameri- cans also apply it to other situations. Someone who displays a terrible temper, or one who is so reckless as to go into a situa- tion over one’s head, or even someone who is crazy is said to have “gone off the deep end.” See in over your head.
