This was the name given to the Mongolian Tartars who invaded Russia in the 13th century and established an empire there under Bator, a grandson of Genghis Khan, that lasted two centuries. They were so called because the color of their skin appeared golden to their adversaries. Hordes has al- ways been a favorite word of Europeans for Asian armies. See asiatic hordes. |
