golden parachute. A contract guaranteeing a company exec- utive very generous benefits, including severance pay, if one loses a job because the company is sold or merged. The Ameri- can term is first recorded in 1981 but is actually an offshoot of the earlier British golden handshake, which dates back to 1960 and means essentially the same, except that the golden parachute is contractual. |
