prostitute. Prostitute came into English early in the 16th cen- tury, but the word derives ultimately from the much older Latin prostiture, “to expose for sale.” The best-known prostitute, at least of repentant prostitutes, is St. Mary Magdaline, who is also the patron saint of reformed prostitutes. She was cured of evil spirits by Jesus (Luke 8:2) and later was the first to see Jesus rise from the tomb after his crucifixion (John 20:1–18). For some unfathomable reason prostitute is regarded by some peo- ple as an obscene word. According to William Safire’s Coming to Terms (1991), the U.S. State Department euphemisticaly re- fers to these ladies of the night as “available casual indigenous female companions.”
