pro. One dictionary says the short form pro for a professional is first recorded in about 1850, so it could have originated in base- ball, though there is no proof of this nor of any other origin. The first recorded mention of professional players in baseball is in 1867, when the Rockford, Illinois team began paying salaries to expert players, prompting amateur “gentlemen players” all over to complain about the practice. But by 1869 baseball’s first profes- sional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was touring the coun- try and a new age in the sport had begun. See also amateur.
