runway. Runway, for “a landing strip at an airport,” probably has its origins in the runway of burlesque, the narrow ramp ex- tending from the stage into an aisle in theaters or nightclubs, on which women dance within reach of the audience. The Americanism runway is, however, recorded as early as 1835 as the path for a deer, and also means the bed or channel of a stream. |
