词汇 | congregation |
词源 | congregation. The use of the term flock as a synonym for a church’s congregation has an etymological as well as poetic ba- sis, for congregation derives from the Latin congregare, to flock together, suggesting birds rather than lambs or sheep, however. Daniel Defoe’s verse satire The True-Born Englishman (1710), which sold some 80,000 copies on the streets, had this to say on the subject: Whenever God erects a house of prayer The devil always builds a chapel there; And ‘twill be found upon examination, The latter has the larger congregation. |
